True Detective 2's entire first episode was given over to character introduction and some surface level plot work, which made it feel like an hour of aimless wandering. The pacing was slow, the characters were a gloomy bunch that weren't all that interesting, and it took so long getting to the point that there was nothing resembling a hook. It was OK and that's about as positive as I can get about it. That suits the show, I suppose, as it seems to be rooted so deep in the negative that even Rust Cohle would balk.
My biggest problem with last night's episode is the characters. Though we spend a lot of time being introduced to them, the success of that introduction is questionable. There was a solid hour given over to these characters and they weren't developed beyond archetypes. Well, two of them weren't developed beyond archetypes. Rachel McAdams' character doesn't even get that. She is just kind of stuck as an angry woman with vague sex and daddy issues and there she'll stay if how poorly women were handled in the first series is any indication.
I'm going to stay positive and keep watching. Hopefully this will turn out good.
EDIT: THREE of them, sorry. I forgot about Vince Vaughn already.
EDITx2: This article pretty much sums up my issues. It is in handy, dandy list form, but there are thirty-one entries. There could be more, I think.
