I should start this thread by suggesting that you watch True Detective if you haven't yet done so. I'm usually wary of hype, but there was too much praise from too many trusted sources for me to ignore this series and I am glad, so glad that I started in early instead of later regretting not having done so. It is a slow burning show and probably won't float everyone's boat, but it fantastic and perhaps the best television series that I have seen in years. I was going to wait until the series hit Blu-ray and DVD next month to create this thread, in the hopes of posting through a rewatch, but news has started to trickle in about the second series and I figured there might be some members out there who are interested. < Read Further> As it turns out, I haven't seen anything that Chastain has been in and looking at the list on IMDB, I probably won't remedy that anytime soon. Still, for a show that had several complaints about the lack of women characters--especially in important roles outside of relationships, affairs, and victims--bringing in an actress for the lead role is probably the best direction. I've also seen rumors that Brad Pitt might join the cast, likely as her partner, but they have been denied thus far. Granted, denying a rumor in Hollywood is half a step below a press release announcing the deal.

I will second the notion to watch this great show, especially if you haven't already. As for Chastain, her and HBO say it's not true. I'd be interested to see Brad Pitt in a role of some kind, too, but I doubt it will happen.

This was as of last night and I'm afraid I haven't followed up on it at all. Thanks for the update. Having not seen any of her work, I can't say that I am disappointed. As for the Pitt rumors... it is best to doubt them, but I think he would be a great match for the show and thus have some hope. He is a part of the HBO family and that might help.

Yeah, I haven't seen any of her work, either...not that I'm aware of, anyhow.
As for Pitt, I would love to see it happen, as he's one of my favorite actors. I doubt it will happen, but, if it does, I'd be thrilled.

My mom watched True Detective and raved about it, so I guess I'll have to jump in. I hear there's a bit of the Cthulu mythos mentioned, or something that was associated with it. I need to look up the Yellow king.

A little more news about the second season: < Here's the source, but the rest of the article doesn't provide any details that haven't been repeated ad nauseam for months now.> Really, this is just minor details. The series having three leads is new information. I've seen the bit about it taking place in California floating around, but the extra detail is nice. I am glad to hear that Los Angeles won't be part of the setting, though I would have been surprised had it been. The show has already established that it does well with bleak and desolate and I'd like for them to stick with it. Plus, it is nice to see a detective series not set in a major city. Given the line about starting to cast in earnest in the coming months, it sounds like they've been casting nets but not having much luck and that's pretty much what we have seen so far with the casting rumors.

True Detective is now out on DVD and Blu-ray. Amazon seems the best place to go for Blu-ray. At $29.99, they're about ten dollars cheaper than the competitors. DVD prices seems the same across the board except for Best Buy, which is selling it for ten dollars more than everyone else.

I really have to see this sometime. We don't get HBO so I've completely missed the series. I've really only heard good things about it so I have high expectations.

Got a couple of trailers for season two. The second one is better, if only because it has music and the music is one of the better things about True Detective.

Can't wait for the new season. Hopefully, it will be just as good as the first.

Can't wait for the new season. Hopefully, it will be just as good as the first. I don't think they are taking the show in as weird a direction this time around and I am sad that Cary Fukunaga didn't return to direct as he produced some damn fine scenes throughout the first series (like the six-minute single take tracking shot from episode four), but I don't doubt that they'll do the best they can to keep the quality established in the first series.

True enough. As I said, definitely looking forward to seeing what they do this time around. And yeah, I wish Fukunaga would have stuck around, too, but ah well.

True Detective 2's entire first episode was given over to character introduction and some surface level plot work, which made it feel like an hour of aimless wandering. The pacing was slow, the characters were a gloomy bunch that weren't all that interesting, and it took so long getting to the point that there was nothing resembling a hook. It was OK and that's about as positive as I can get about it. That suits the show, I suppose, as it seems to be rooted so deep in the negative that even Rust Cohle would balk. My biggest problem with last night's episode is the characters. Though we spend a lot of time being introduced to them, the success of that introduction is questionable. There was a solid hour given over to these characters and they weren't developed beyond archetypes. Well, two of them weren't developed beyond archetypes. Rachel McAdams' character doesn't even get that. She is just kind of stuck as an angry woman with vague sex and daddy issues and there she'll stay if how poorly women were handled in the first series is any indication. I'm going to stay positive and keep watching. Hopefully this will turn out good. EDIT: THREE of them, sorry. I forgot about Vince Vaughn already. EDITx2: This article pretty much sums up my issues. It is in handy, dandy list form, but there are thirty-one entries. There could be more, I think.

Yeah, I agree that it wasn't great. However, I will continue watching, in hopes that it picks up.
