My mom was dating this guy who had a son and it was he who introduced me to Drizzt. He told me how The Crystal Shard was written first but that Homeland was a prequel and so he told me that I should start with the prequel. It never occurred to me until a few years ago when I read a post in another forum where someone said that they were happy they started with The Crystal Shard because it begged questions of the main character-to-be such as Who is he? Where did he come from? and most importantly What's his story?
I understand what this person meant but he also started reading the Drizzt stories in '88 when Wulfgar was originally intended to be the main character (even if Salvatore secretly knew who it was really about). So what do you guys think? Do you think it is better to start with The Crystal Shard or Homeland? Or do you think that it doesn't really matter?
It doesn't really matter to me either way but I do find myself wishing I had been born a little earlier (I was born the year The Crystal Shard was published) so that I could have also experienced the mystery of who is this ranger drow? But then I'm also happy that I started them when I did because I was able to marathon through them (I finally caught up to the series when The Hunter's Blades trilogy came out).

I always recommend that people start with Homeland. It isn't that I don't think TCS isn't a wonderful book, but I think Homeland is probably the finest thing Salvatore's written, with the POSSIBLE exception of Mortalis. It grabbed me because it was so utterly different from anything I'd read up to that point. I don't think TCS has quite the same uniqueness of voice that Homeland does.

When I had first started reading the Dark elf Trilogy wasn't an option yet (Ah~ the joys of being old!) and I have to say, I wouldn't do it differently. I fell in love with the characters as they were first written and then I got to discover Drizzt's past. I do actually recommend to others that they start with homeland, though, because I feel like its one hell of a hook for new readers.

I doubt that I would have made it through The Crystal Shard without the familiarity and interest instilled by the Dark Elf Trilogy. It isn't a bad book, but it is generic and that wasn't enough for me when I was first trying to get into fantasy. Homeland lures you in because even if it is a story that you have seen before, the setting offers something unique.

I say start with Homeland. Menzoberranzan is something that absolutely needs to be experienced by all new readers, and while the Crystal Shard is good, it doesn't necessarily have a great environment to it (Tundra, Tundra, more Tundra, mountain). The Drow city, on the other hand, is Dark, Moody, mysterious and truly manages to hook you and immerse you in the world of the Forgotten Realms.
