Okay, so I just finished this book and... Man, that was sad. Even with the triumph in the end it's genuinely one of the saddest books I've ever read. That being said, I did like it. Even with the magic and such, I could really imagine a lot of the events of the book going on here on Earth back in the middle ages. It strikes a really good balance between reality and fantasy, and is stronger because of it. Not as good as some of Bob's other books, but I still enjoyed it. What are your thoughts on it?

I really enjoyed this one, as well. As you said, it's not quite as good as some of his other works, especially the first Demon War books, but it's still very solid. The rest of the books in the Saga of the First King series are good, as well, although this first one really is the strongest of the bunch. I didn't really care for the last one all that much.

I really enjoyed The Highwayman, but did not at all enjoy The Ancient. I dropped the series after it.

Part of me wished the Highwayman was a standalone- It was so strong on its own and then it lost me. I did read the Ancient, but it was a struggle and I'm happy to say I've forgotten most of it. the ancient wasn't a bad book- it just didn't seem to fit with the first.
Anyway, yeah, liked the Highwayman a lot.
