I'm assuming that most of you have never heard of Graham Joyce. His fiction resides on the blurred edges of genre, where the psychological and the supernatural blend into one another. It has been referred to as Magical Realism by way of Britain, but he preferred to call it, perhaps jokingly, as Old Peculiar. Graham Joyce, through his fiction, changed the way I thought about genre--it made me examine the artificial borders that I had constructed and led me to tear them down and venture forth into the unknown reaches that existed beyond my comfort zone. I have loved some of his books fiercely, I have been disappointed by some, and disliked a few. Still, each new novel was accompanied by anticipation and hope.
Graham Joyce was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma cancer last year. He fought well, fought for a year and more, but eventually all battles come to an end and the outcome is not always and, unfortunately, not often, the one we prefer. Rest in peace, Graham Joyce. You will be missed.

If you are looking to read his books, I'd recommend starting with one of these:
How to Make Friends with Demons (Memoirs of a Master Forger by William Heaney, in the UK) The Facts of Life The Tooth Fairy
