If I am going to come back and put more effort into keeping this place barely afloat, then I may as well do it in the worst way possible. That means you have to deal with my titling. If you don't get the title of this thread, then you are lucky enough to have never been exposed to people with poor taste in music anthologies or the commercials that make them break out their credit cards.
What am I listening to? Well, if you want to know the literal breakdown of what I am listening to, you can always check me out over at last.fm. If you'd rather just have a snapshot of the crap I have playing over and over again throughout the day, then we can do that, too.
Georgia Maq
I'm not even familiar with the home grown music coming out of Kansas City, yet a home grown musician out of Australia came out of nowhere and blew me away. I guess it helps to have an old Australian friend who is into this sort of thing.
Georgia Maq's music is difficult to describe for me because I so rarely venture off from the beaten path. I know that accompanying music is acoustic. I know that her lyrics are always personal and often angry or sentimental. I know that she has an amazing voice that absolutely rocks alongside the aforementioned. What I don't know is what to call it. Punk? Folk? I dunno... and honestly I don't really give a damn. The only thing that matters is how good the music is and oh man, it is ever that.
You can listen to (and buy, if you want) most, if not all, of her music over at Band Camp.
The Flying So High-Os
Another band discovered via the old Australian buddy. This band is actually pretty infuriating for me because I like to dig into a band once I've been hooked and The Flying So High-Os have so few available. I've heard so little, but I've loved everything that I have heard. They describe themselves as Hard Folk and no, I don't know what that means. You can find them on Band Camp and Triple J Unearthed. Give them a go.
Misterwives
Misterwives is an indiepop band out of New York who sort of popped up out of nowhere last year with their single, Reflections. It wasn't the best song off their EP (or full album, now), but it is a good single and a great example of how energetic the band's music often is. I discovered them through the local alternative station, who through the single into such a heavy rotation that my nerves would have been frayed within a matter of days had I not fallen in love with the band's sound. I suggest giving them a listen.
X Ambassadors
They are pretty good. I listened them while writing a few pieces for a blog I'm failing at and they have a pretty decent sound. They don't blow me away by any means, but i was happy just chilling with them playing in the background. Glad I decided to check out the rest of their music, actually, because the song that led me to them, Renegades, is weak compared to the rest of their disco. Their album drops sometime this month, going to have to keep my eyes out.
