I've heard a lot of naysayers spouting lines about how these books came across as a well written fan fiction.
I politely disagree.
The novels co-written by Bob and Geno tell the story of characters who exist in the same setting Drizzt and his companions and are subtly affected by the course of Drizzt and company's actions. too me this was a refreshing twist. The reader was able to see the effects of the Companion's deeds from the other side- Not the saviors, but the saved.
Maimun's story alone, even if Drizzt had never crossed his path, was fun. adding in some familiar faces like Drizzt and the crew of Sea Sprite just made it all more comfortable for me.
To me, it wasn't fan fiction. The trilogy was a separate story that just happened to cross paths with that of the Companions of the Hall and even added a bit to some places that were blank to our knowledge previously (The boat ride to Calimport to rescue Regis from Entreri and the origins of a certain wizard I am partial to, for example.).
What's your take?

Yeah, I was one such naysayer. Whether or not it was fan fiction can be left up in the air since, at this point, years later, I can't remember the story well enough to say anything about it. However, I do know that I didn't enjoy the story enough to continue past the first book and was rather angry that the book stopped as abruptly as it did, creating the worst kind of sequel-bait.

I do remember teasing Bob for a later cliffhanger/ abrupt ending with the line "You pulled a Geno!", but I actually was glad I powered through the first book and started the second. In my opinion they got better as the went on.

I will go back to these books and read them, I like the idea of a story that happens to cross paths with Drizzt and Co. It should be a nice reminder that the Realms is a lot bigger than just one set of character's stories, and I do love the books that involve Captain Deaudermont and Sea Sprite, so these should be enjoyable to read too

I never actually read the books but that's because I'm not a fan of the first-person perspective. Still, Salvatore helped write the books with his son and he even said that it is canon so that's good enough for me.

If Bob had a hand in it, I wanna read it XD I'm sure Geno is a good writer too, and they're quick reads from what I've heard so it should make a nice rainy day distraction

Yeah, they're fairly quick reads. I remember checking them out and enjoying them, when they first came out.
