The only place I know to find this wonderful story is in The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction by Phillip Athans. Salvatore wrote this story and submitted it to a magazine shortly after The Crystal Shard was published. The best thing about it is that it was rejected. Now I'm certainly not mocking one of our favorite authors. No, no, no! But rather, I'm holding this up as an example to any would-be writer to not be discouraged by rejection because even a best-selling author is turned down from time to time.
Anyways, I made mention of this story in my introduction post but felt like it deserves its own thread so that others will have a chance to read it. It is, in my humble opinion the perfect example of what science fiction is really all about. You don't need super technology and alien invasions to tell an awesome science fiction story.
I made this thread for people who have not yet read the story so if you have already read it then please NO SPOILERS. Now I'm horrible at describing a story and so for those of you who have not read it, I'll throw you a hook. What do Jesus Christ and Adolph Hitler have in common? You want to know, don't you? If so, read Hugo Mann's Perfect Soul. It's a short story and you can breeze through it in about 15 minutes but I can assure you that you'll be talking about it for much longer.

I'm absolutely going to check that out. It's hard to believe that Salvatore's work was ever rejected, but I guess you can't win 'em all.

And the crazy thing is that he was actually approached to write a short story for said magazine but when he finished the story and handed it in, they turned it down because it just wasn't what they were looking for. That's crazy! THEY came to HIM and then turned him down! Yet it actually gives me hope because like you said, you can't win 'em all.
