Get any new books lately? Tell us. Had the sudden desire to do something the other day, so we headed out to a couple of local Half Price Books. Picked up: - A Book of Horrors edited by Stephen Jones
- The Essential Clive Barker by Clive Barker - I should note that this is pretty much a rip off and had I known that at the time I would have skipped it. A book of excerpts from Barker's novels. Given the name, I thought it was his short fiction, but nope. It was cheap though and I haven't actually read any of his longer work, so I guess this will point me in the right direction if something catches my eye.
- The Whisperer in the Darkness: Collected Short Stories by H.P. Lovecraft
- The Horror in the Museum: Collected Short Stories by H.P. Lovecraft
- The Long Lost by Ramsey Campbell - I had to venture into the paperback section for this one... something that I rarely ever do since I hate the format. There was just nothing from Campbell to be found among the hardcover and trade shelves. Besides Solomon Kane novelization from the recent(ish) film, this was the only book from him and it isn't in the best of shape. Apparently, not one of his better books either. I'll still read it, even if it might not be the best place to start.
- The Lottery by Shirley Jackson - This story was recommended to me years ago, but I never got around to hunting it down. I found this in the clearance section, bagged and tagged as a collector's item since it is a crumbling pulp paperback from 1967.

I picked up some really random stuff recently from Half-Price Books.
The Darkest Craving by Gena Showalter - Yes, I read romance. Part of the Lords of the Underworld series. It's not bad and the characters are all interesting with their own problems. It does get predictable since you know what will happen in the end, but the journey can be surprising at times.
Beauty Awakened by Gena Showalter - Again, romance. It's a spin-off of the Lords of the Underworld. It's enjoyable as well as predictable as are most romance novels.
Sin Undone and Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione - Yeah, more romance. I started the Demonica series a few years ago and just happened to find these two on the shelf. Haven't read them yet, but I expect they'll have the usual romance stuff.
Villains By Necessity by Eve Forward - I found this book when I was in high school. I actually liberated it from the school library. It's a great twist as the villains must save the world. I enjoyed it a lot and recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy, but it did take me nearly a decade to find a second copy so yeah....
The Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks - I love these books. I started out with his Night Angel series and I got hooked. This new series, Lightbringer, is great. The plot keeps you guessing, the characters are fleshed out, and it's got an interesting take on magic. The books are big, but worth it.
The Phoenix Endangered by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory - A continuation of the Obsidian Trilogy. I enjoyed the first trilogy but I haven't read the second set yet. I liked the first trilogy and the characters so I don't expect to be disappointed. The beginning is a little slow, though.
Slashback by Rob Thurman - I'll be honest that there were two things that caught my eye when I first picked up the Cal Leandros books. First: the word Moon on the cover of the second book. Second: the two cute guys on the cover, one of which was wielding a sword. I got the first book Nightlife and picked up the second two days later when I finished it (couldn't put it down for anything!). This one is number seven. It's fantasy meets modern day. Even though it's a bit dark and gritty, it has its moments of humor and fun. I'd recommend this series to anyone who can take a bit of darkness with their fantasy. Now that I think about it, it kind of reminds me of "Supernatural" but without all the religion.
That's about it for my recent acquisitions. I also picked up The Highwayman since I want to start reading that series, but that's for another section of the forum.

Authority, by Jeff VanderMeer. The follow up to Annihilation, which was released earlier this year. That book was excellent. I'm hoping that this one follows suit.
